Have you ever done archery inside the crater of a volcano? Bet you didn’t even know it was possible, but the Izu Peninsula has it all! I highly recommend making a stop in Ito for a chair lift ride up to the top of Mount Omuro. Omuro is a 580 meter high extinct volcano with spectacular views from the top of the crater and surreal views inside the crater. You can walk the rim of this perfectly cone-shaped mountain and take stairs down into the crater where you can practice your archery skills. For a ¥1000 an hour you can rent everything you need, bow, arrows, and gloves. The targets are already in place. Just choose your spot and start shooting. And don’t worry if you have never tried archery before, the staff will give you a few pointers when you pick up your gear.
To get to Omuro-yama you can take a bus from either Ito or Izu Kogen Station. If you are on your way to Shimoda I suggest you get off at Ito Station, where you can purchase an Izu Rail Pass (for foreign passport holders only) and save money on your journey. Take the bus to Shaboten Koen (Cactus Park and Zoo), you can walk to the chair lift from there. A return trip for the lift is ¥500 for adults. If you are on your way back from Shimoda then Izu Kogen Station is closer, again take the bus to Shaboten Koen and walk from there.
