Fontaine Bakery & Cafe

Fontaine bakery and cafe shimoda kisami

I think most foreigners living in Japan would agree that there are not enough breakfast places around. So I am happy to have discovered a great new spot with fluffy omelettes, toast, Italian coffee and freshly squeezed OJ.  UPDATE:  I’m sad to say, Fontaine doesn’t have fluffy eggs and toast on the menu anymore. They do have some great sandwiches and pastries though. You can eat in or take out. They also have a bit of an outdoor deck but it’s walled in so doesn’t quite feel fresh and breezy.  However, it is less than 15 minutes on a bicycle and all there set meals, and pastries are very reasonable, fresh, and very tasty too!

Fontaine seems to have extended their hours so they are now open in the evening for dinner. I forgot to take pics last time of our meal. I had a smoked salmon sandwich and my dining partner had a curry and was very impressed with the big chunks of meat. I don’t eat meat, I’m a pescetarian but there wasn’t much fish on the menu either but I still think it’s worth the bicycle ride even for just their pastries. They also have freshly baked bread you can pick up and take back with you to your accommodation or to the beach!

Fontaine Cafe and Cake shop is just a little south of Kisami on the 136, Izu Peninsula’s main road. It’s easy to get there on a bike from Retreat wabi-sabi. If you’re staying with us and haven’t rented one from us already, come down to the cafe and we’ll get you sorted with some wheels. If there are two of you, we’ve even got tandem bikes now! If you are going by car, Fontaine  has plenty of free parking.
